Competent English is the minimum to lodge an Expression of Interest for the main skilled visas (subclass 189, 190 and 491) but adds no points. Moving from Competent to Superior adds 20 points, often the difference between waiting and receiving an invitation. You must reach every skill score in one test.

Speaking is the wall for most applicants. Superior needs Speaking 88, so fluency and pronunciation practice usually matter more than new vocabulary.

What 10 or 20 English points can do

The pass mark for points-tested visas is 65, but invitations in competitive occupations often go to people with far more. English is one of the few point categories you can still change quickly. Age, qualifications and work experience are mostly fixed by the time you apply. For regional visas, see our guide to the PTE score for a 491 visa.

Student visa (subclass 500)

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the standard visa minimum is PTE Academic 47 overall. Lower minimums apply if you package your main course with an English (ELICOS) course of a set length. Your university will usually ask for more than the visa minimum, often 50 to 65 overall with minimum skill scores, so check your offer letter. The university requirement is the one that decides whether you get in.

Nursing and health registration (AHPRA)

For tests taken from 23 April 2026, AHPRA requires overall 63, with Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 60 and Speaking 76. Up to two test sittings within 12 months can be used under conditions set by the Boards. Full details: PTE for nurses.

Which test: PTE Academic, PTE Core or at-home?

  • PTE Academic is the version for Australian visas and universities.
  • PTE Core is for Canadian economic immigration, not Australia. See PTE Core vs PTE Academic.
  • At-home or online tests are not accepted for Australian visas. See PTE at home vs test centre.

How to plan your score target

  1. Work out your points with and without English points.
  2. Check your current skills against Proficient and Superior with our score calculator.
  3. Fix the skill with the biggest gap first. For most students that is Speaking, then Writing.
  4. Take a scored mock before booking. Book when every skill clears the target in two mocks in a row.

How to close the Speaking gap

Why applicants miss Proficient or Superior

  • Speaking below target while the other three skills pass. This is the most common pattern by far.
  • Writing a few points short because of spelling, or summaries and essays that break the form rules.
  • Treating 65 or 79 overall as the goal instead of checking each skill against the August 2025 minimums.
  • Booking the real test after one good mock. Two mocks in a row above target is a safer signal.

When to take PTE in your PR journey

  1. Early: take a diagnostic mock as soon as you start planning, so you know how many English points are realistic.
  2. Before your Expression of Interest: your English level counts towards the points you claim, so sit the real test before you lodge your EOI.
  3. Keep it valid: skilled visas generally accept tests taken within three years before your invitation. If your score is close to expiring, plan a new test.
  4. Re-test to climb: if you reach Proficient, a later test that reaches Superior can add another 10 points to your profile.
