You do not need an Australian or British accent to score well in PTE Speaking. The scoring engine marks whether your speech is clear and easy to understand: correct sounds, word endings and word stress. A Nepali accent with clear sounds scores well. These are the seven patterns we most often fix with Nepali students.

The 7 sounds and patterns to fix

PatternCommon slipPractice words
V vs W"wery" for very, "vest" for westvery, west, vine, wine
Z vs J"jero" for zero, "jone" for zonezero, zone, lazy, busy
F vs PHa puffed "ph" for fcoffee, office, fifty
TH"tink" for think, "dis" for thisthink, three, this, weather
Short vowelsship and sheep, bed and bad sound the sameship/sheep, bed/bad, full/fool
S clusters"iskool" for school, "istation" for stationschool, station, speak, street
Word endingsdropping -s, -ed, -tstudents, worked, asked, most

Word endings matter twice: they affect pronunciation marks and content marks in Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence.

Word stress: the hidden score killer

English words have one strongly stressed syllable, and the stress can move between related words:

  • PHOto-graph, pho-TO-gra-phy, pho-to-GRAPH-ic
  • E-co-no-my, e-co-NO-mic
  • de-VE-lop-ment (not DE-ve-lop-ment)

Nepali gives syllables more equal weight, so English can sound flat. Stress content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives) and let small words like "a", "of", "to" stay light.

The schwa sound

In unstressed syllables, English vowels often reduce to a soft "uh" sound (the schwa): a-bout, pro-blem, com-pu-ter (only the stressed syllable is full). Saying every vowel fully sounds robotic and can lower fluency.

A 10-minute daily pronunciation routine

  1. 2 minutes: minimal pairs out loud (very/west, ship/sheep, zero/jero).
  2. 4 minutes: read a short Read Aloud text, marking stressed syllables first.
  3. 4 minutes: record five Repeat Sentence items and listen for endings and stress.

Fluency beats perfect sounds

Do not slow down to pronounce every sound perfectly. The scoring engine penalises pauses and restarts more than an imperfect sound. Fix sounds in practice, then speak smoothly in the test.

Frequently asked questions

No. PTE marks clarity, not accent. Clear sounds, endings and stress are what count.

Which pronunciation problem costs the most marks?

Missing word endings and flat word stress, because they affect many speaking items.
