PTE Academic is the test for studying abroad and for Australian and New Zealand visas. PTE Core is a general English test made for Canadian economic immigration. PTE Academic UKVI is the version of PTE Academic taken under extra security rules for some UK visas. Booking the wrong one is an expensive mistake, so check before you pay.

How the tests differ
- Content: PTE Academic uses academic topics like lectures and research. PTE Core uses everyday and workplace topics.
- Tasks: both share many task types. PTE Core uses tasks such as writing an email where Academic uses an essay. Since August 2025, both include Respond to a Situation.
- Scores: both report on the 10 to 90 scale. Canada converts PTE Core scores to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels.
- Format and length: both are computer-based and take about two hours.
Common mix-ups
- Booking PTE Core for an Australian visa. Australia uses PTE Academic.
- Booking PTE Academic for Canadian Express Entry. Canada uses PTE Core for economic immigration.
- Booking regular PTE Academic when a UK visa specifically needs UKVI.
Can one preparation cover both?
Mostly, yes. Speaking fluency, listening accuracy and writing control help in every version. If you need PTE Academic, our guides to the PTE exam format and PTE scores for Australia are the best place to start.
Frequently asked questions
Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?
Not easier, just different. Core uses everyday topics instead of academic ones. Choose the test your goal requires, not the one that seems easier.
Does Australia accept PTE Core?
For Australian visas, book PTE Academic. Check the Home Affairs English test page for your visa type.
What is PTE Academic UKVI?
The same test as PTE Academic, taken under additional security for UK visa purposes. Only book it if your UK visa route asks for it.
