Australian PR points for English

Home Affairs awards points for English on skilled visas (subclass 189, 190 and 491). Every skill must reach the score in one test.

Understanding PTE scoring

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic is a computer-based English language test trusted by universities, colleges and governments around the world. It evaluates your English across four communicative skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening.

Scores are graded against the Global Scale of English, from 10 to 90. Your Overall Score comes from your performance across all test items. It closely tracks the average of your four skills, but it is worked out by Pearson's own scoring, so it can differ.

PTE and the Canadian Language Benchmark

For Canadian immigration such as Express Entry, your English is measured against the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). For Express Entry and other economic immigration programmes, Canada accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic.

CLB 9 across all skills is widely seen as the target for Express Entry, as it unlocks extra points for skill transferability. Always check current IRCC guidance for whether PTE Academic or PTE Core applies to your stream.
