For Canadian economic immigration, including Express Entry, Canada accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Your PTE Core scores are converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels skill by skill, and your overall CLB level is set by your lowest skill. Most sources list CLB 7 as roughly Listening 60 to 70, Reading 60 to 68, Speaking 68 to 75 and Writing 69 to 78.
Always confirm the current conversion table on the official Government of Canada website before you rely on it. Tables are updated from time to time.
PTE Core to CLB chart (most common published ranges)
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Speaking | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 9 | 82 to 88 | 78 to 87 | 84 to 88 | 88 to 89 |
| CLB 7 | 60 to 70 | 60 to 68 | 68 to 75 | 69 to 78 |
Your CLB is only as high as your weakest skill. Scores of 88, 88, 88 and 69 in Writing give CLB 7, not CLB 9.
Why CLB 7 and CLB 9 matter
- CLB 7 in every skill is the usual minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker program.
- CLB 9 and above earns significantly more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points in Express Entry, which can be the difference in a draw.

How to prepare for PTE Core
- Writing is often the bottleneck for CLB 9 (88 to 89). Spelling, grammar and task form matter as much as ideas.
- Speaking is marked on content, fluency and pronunciation, and fluency is where most students lose marks. The same fluency habits that help in PTE Academic apply: start quickly, keep an even pace, do not self-correct. See Repeat Sentence tips.
- Respond to a Situation is part of PTE Core. Our Respond to a Situation guide covers structure and samples (PTE Core gives more preparation time).
