Summarize Spoken Text is the first task in Listening. You hear a lecture of about 60 to 90 seconds, then have 10 minutes to write a summary of 50 to 70 words. There is one question per test, and it scores Listening (10%) and Writing (18%) by Pearson's question weightings. Good notes plus a simple structure make it one of the easiest tasks to score well on.
How it is scored
| Criterion | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Content | The main points of the lecture |
| Form | 50 to 70 words (under 40 or over 100 scores zero) |
| Grammar | Accurate sentences |
| Vocabulary | Suitable word choice |
| Spelling | Correct spelling |
Grammar is marked here, and it matters. Unlike Retell Lecture, every sentence you write is checked.
How to take notes
- Write the topic as soon as you hear it.
- Write key phrases of 4 to 5 words, not single keywords: "cities destroy natural habitats", not "habitats".
- Note the conclusion or recommendation if the speaker gives one.
How to structure your summary
Open with the topic in one short sentence. Then write two or three sentences that each carry two of your noted points, joined with "and". Close with a conclusion that reports the speaker's final point with a reporting verb. Four or five sentences usually land inside 50 to 70 words.
Reporting verbs: past tense, no extra "about"
Report in the past: mentioned, explained, discussed, said, suggested. The most common error is adding "about":
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
| The speaker discussed about climate change. | The speaker discussed climate change. |
| She explained about the new policy. | She explained the new policy. |
| He mentioned about rising rents. | He mentioned rising rents. |
Only "talked" takes "about": "The speaker talked about climate change."

Sample answer
"The speaker discussed the effects of urban growth on local wildlife. He explained that expanding cities destroy natural habitats, and that many species are forced to adapt or move away. He also mentioned that some animals, such as foxes and certain birds, now thrive in cities because food is easy to find. In conclusion, the speaker suggested that urban planning should include green spaces to protect biodiversity." *(67 words)*
Common mistakes
- Going over 70 words by adding small details.
- Writing "discussed about" or "explained about".
- Mixing present and past reporting verbs.
- Using all 10 minutes to write and none to check.
