Most students need 2 to 6 weeks of focused preparation for PTE, depending on their current English level and target score. A retaker a few points short may need only one to two weeks. A first-time test taker aiming for a high score usually needs one to three months.
Timelines by situation
| Your situation | Realistic preparation time |
|---|---|
| Retaker, 1 to 5 points short in one skill | 1 to 2 weeks |
| First attempt, aiming for 50 to 58 overall | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Aiming for Proficient (Speaking 76, Writing 69) | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Aiming for Superior (Speaking 88, Writing 85) | 4 to 12 weeks |
| English needs general improvement first | 2 to 3 months or more |
These are typical ranges, not promises. Daily practice time and good feedback matter more than the number of weeks.
Step 1: find your real starting point
Take one full scored mock test. Compare your four skill scores with your target using our score calculator. The skill with the biggest gap decides your timeline.
Step 2: choose a plan
- 1 week: for retakers polishing one or two tasks. Daily drills on the weak tasks plus one mock.
- 2 weeks: see our realistic two-week study plan.
- 1 month: learn structures for every task, then build speed and accuracy, with a mock each week.
- 3 months: build general vocabulary, reading and listening first, then move into test practice.
Whatever your timeline, spend most of your practice on the tasks our class guide rates most important: Describe Image, Repeat Sentence, Retell Lecture and Summarize Group Discussion in Speaking, all four writing tasks (Write Essay, Summarize Written Text, Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation), and both Reading Fill in the Blanks tasks. The multiple-choice tasks, Answer Short Question and Select Missing Word are worth little, so leave them for last.
How much to study each day
Sixty to ninety focused minutes a day beats a five-hour session once a week. Speaking fluency and dictation accuracy are skills that improve with frequent repetition.
Signs you are ready to book
- Your last two mocks clear your target in every skill, not just overall.
- You can finish Reading and Listening without rushing the last questions.
- Your speaking recordings have no long pauses or restarts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I prepare for PTE in one week?
Yes, if you are close to your target and know the format. One week is not enough to build general English from scratch.
Should I book the test first to motivate myself?
Booking too early often leads to a retake at the full fee. Book when your mocks are close to your target. See our PTE exam fee guide.
Is self-study enough for PTE?
For some students, yes. Most students reach their target faster with feedback on speaking and writing, because it is hard to hear your own fluency problems.
Our plans run for 1 week, 2 weeks or 1 month, so you can match them to your timeline. See courses and prices or ask us on WhatsApp which plan fits.
